Frequently Asked Questions
Our Products & Materials
What materials do you use to make your products?
At the moment, we feature products made from polymer clay and Jesmonite.
We use polymer clay and Jesmonite AC100 to make our jewellery, paired with findings made from hypoallergenic stainless steel. For our homeware pieces, we use Jesmonite AC100 and Jesmonite AC730.
What is polymer clay?
Polymer clay is a modelling material which can be sculpted and cured in an oven. The result is flexible, strong and lightweight, perfect for making jewellery. It's an incredibly versatile material, and many effects can be created using polymer clay. It is great for mimicking natural materials like leather, wood, gemstones and sea glass, or you can create vivid and bold abstract designs. The possibilities really are endless!
There are many reputable brands of polymer clay out there, as well as generic unnamed products (best avoided as their quality is inconsistent). At STUDIO / PRISMORA we only use the highest quality name brands, Sculpey Premo and Cernit.
What is Jesmonite?
When asked at markets, we usually give the simple answer that Jesmonite is basically 'artistic concrete'. However, there's a little more to it than that!
Jesmonite is a brand name, and the company specialises in making composite materials that can be used to replicate stone and plaster. At STUDIO / PRISMORA we use two of their materials to make our products - AC100 and AC730.
Jesmonite AC100 is a material made by blending naturally occuring, locally sourced gypsum powder with a water-based polymer emulsion. The resulting material is strong, and the smooth finish is reminiscent of plaster of Paris. The polymer emulsion adds strength to the material, making the results chip resistant and durable enough for every day applications. This makes Jesmonite AC100 the perfect material for making everyday homeware products like decorative trays, coasters, incense burners, candle jars, jewellery and more. AC100 in its natural state is porous, but sealants can be applied to add water resistance.
Jesmonite AC730 is a very similar material to AC100 but instead of gypsum powder, the base powder is made from concrete. The results of AC730 pours are more similar to concrete than plaster of Paris, and can be acid etched to resemble natural stone. The benefit of AC730 is that it is waterproof, and so we use this material to make soap dishes, plant pots and any other products that will come into regular contact with water.
Is your jewellery suitable for people with nickel allergies?
At STUDIO / PRISMORA, all of our jewellery findings are made from stainless steel. We choose to solely work with stainless steel as it is corrosion resistant, generally considered to be hypoallergenic and will NEVER turn your skin green!
Whilst stainless steel does contain nickel, the structure of the material means that little to no nickel is released during wear, so it is generally considered to be safe for those with mild nickel allergies.
The majority of our findings are made from 304 stainless steel, which is widely marketed as hypoallergenic. A few of our earrings are made with 316 stainless steel findings, also known as surgical stainless steel. 316 stainless steel has a lower percentage of nickel than 304 stainless steel; this means that if you are particularly sensitive to nickel, you are less likely to react to 316. We would love to use surgical stainless steel for all of our pieces, but unfortunately it just isn't as readily available for jewellery findings as other types of stainless steel are.
If you would like any more information about the stainless steel we use, or have an enquiry about a particular product on our website, we would recommend getting in touch with us for advice. Please allow up to two working days for a response.
How should I look after my pieces?
We are in the process of writing in depth care guides for our Jesmonite and polymer clay pieces; these will be added to our Articles page as soon as they are complete.
If you have purchased jewellery, we recommend storing your pieces in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. When applying any products to your skin near your jewellery, such as suncream, perfume, body lotion, etc, allow these to dry completely before putting your jewellery on. Wearing your pieces whilst showering or swimming can cause damage, so we would recommend removing your jewellery before coming into contact with water.
Our Jesmonite AC100 pieces are sealed to make them water resistant, so can be wiped clean with water if needed. We do not recommend using cleaning products on them. Our Jesmonite AC730 pieces are completely waterproof and can be submerged in water to be cleaned, using a mild soap if necessary.
If you are unsure which type of Jesmonite your piece is made from, the product listing should state whether it is AC100 or AC730. If you purchased from a market, or cannot find the information you are looking for, generally anything designed to go near water will be AC730 (plant pots, soap holders, etc) and everything else is AC100. If you are still unsure, we'd be more than happy to help you - please allow up to 2 working days for a response.
Do you do custom/bulk orders?
No matter what event you have coming up, we are always happy to discuss custom and bulk orders with our customers. Please do send your enquiry to us via our Contact page, including product type, quantity and any relevant deadline date. Please allow up to two working days for a response.

Charity
Does STUDIO / PRISMORA support charities?
Indeed we do! At STUDIO / PRISMORA we donate 10% of all sales to charity.
To do this, we proudly partner with Work for Good, a platform which facilitates agreements between small businesses and charities. You can find out more about Work for Good here.
Which charities does STUDIO / PRISMORA support?
We believe there are too many good causes out there to choose just one charity to support. That's why we have a charity of the month system. We choose one of Work for Good's partner charities to support for each calendar month. More information about this can be found on our Charity page.
Environmental Impact & Sustainability
Is STUDIO / PRISMORA a sustainable business?
We try our best to be! We send all of our orders in plastic-free cardboard and paper packaging, which can be disposed of in domestic recycling bins.
All of our printed media, including business cards and earring backing cards, are printed on sustainably sourced recycled cardstock.
We use every last scrap of our materials, and are proud to be zero waste with polymer clay and Jesmonite. Check out what we do with our scraps on our social media channels - @studioprismora on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
Are you a zero waste business?
Absolutely! None of our Jesmonite or polymer clay goes to waste, and every little scrap gets used.
Do you use single use products in the creation of your accessories?
We have been working hard to reduce the number of single use products in our production process. We bake our polymer clay products on tiles or directly on dedicated baking tins to avoid using paper, and we mix our Jesmonite with washable silicone stirrers in silicone cups.
We do use nitrile gloves in the production of our products, namely when working with UV resin and when sanding Jesmonite. However, we use each pair of gloves as many times as we can, and once they are no longer usable, we send them to Terracycle for their disposable glove recycling scheme - more information can be found here.
Do your products contain resin?
We do not make any products using epoxy resin. We aim to be as sustainable as possible by creating products that will look good for many years. Epoxy resin is prone to yellowing and has detrimental environmental effects; we proudly use Jesmonite as an eco-friendly alternative.
We do seal some of our earrings with a similar material, UV resin. We only use the best quality UV resin which is BPA free, low in VOCs and contains highly effective UV stabilisers to prevent yellowing. This ensures that your pieces will stay perfect for years to come. Any products containing UV resin will be clearly marked in the item description.
We are always researching and experimenting with alternatives - if you have any suggestions on other products that will replicate the glass-like shine of UV resin, please do get in touch through our socials or the Contact form on our website.
Do your accessories contain animal products?
We love animals at STUDIO / PRISMORA and we take animal welfare very seriously. In fact, we're a vegetarian-owned business; our founder has been a vegetarian since she was twelve years old!
All of our home accessories and jewellery are free from animal products, apart from some of our Jesmonite earrings.
Jesmonite is naturally porous, so we used to seal our pieces with a concrete wax containing sustainably sourced beeswax. However, we have found a vegan alternative that works just as well, so we have made the switch. A few of our older earrings still for sale are sealed with beeswax - this is clearly marked on the product page if you wish to avoid these pieces.
Does STUDIO / PRISMORA use AI technologies?
At STUDIO / PRISMORA we do not, and will not in the future, use generative AI in the production or promotion of our products. Generative AI has huge environmental and social impacts - job losses, huge carbon emissions, high energy usage and increased water demand are just the tip of a worrying iceberg.
Generative AI technologies are trained using the work of creators across a wide range of industries, without permission or compensation. We strongly believe in paying creatives their worth, acknowledging the value of their experience. If there is something we cannot do, we will outsource the task to a fellow creative who shares our anti-AI stance and ensure that they are fairly compensated for their expertise.
About STUDIO / PRISMORA
Who runs STUDIO / PRISMORA?
That would be me, hello! I'm Poppy and I am the founder of STUDIO / PRISMORA. I do everything for the business, including product design, handcrafting items, photography, marketing and shipping your orders out. Find out more about me and the brand on our About Us page.
Why the name STUDIO / PRISMORA?
We wanted our brand name to be as colourful as our products, so we just had to get the word 'prism' in there. Our founder has always dreamed of having home art studio of her very own, a dedicated little space away from the real world where she could focus solely on her creative endeavours. Hence, STUDIO / PRISMORA was born! A colourful little home studio where the grey clouds of Manchester are replaced by vibrant colours and turned into products to brighten up your homes and your outfits.
